Anrich Nortje, the fast bowler of the South African national cricket team, is looking to return to Test matches in the ICC Test Championship series against Australia. This series starts on October 9 in Kingsmead, Durban, and Nortje has recently been added to South Africa's preliminary 18-man squad.

Preparation for the competitions

Nortje, who last played in a Test match in 2023, announced that his training for this return has been underway for some time. He stated: "My preparation has been focused on red-ball cricket for a while now." The player, with 70 wickets from 19 Test matches, continues to work on improving his skills.

Nortje also mentioned collaborating with Piet Botha, the national bowling coach, saying: "I need to see how I can improve in terms of movement and skills, and I have had good discussions with coach Botha." He added that the work he has done spontaneously includes optimizing and strengthening his movements.

Past and future challenges

Nortje is recognized as one of the most effective fast bowlers in the history of South African cricket. He was the leading wicket-taker in the Men's T20 World Cup with 38 wickets in 21 matches. However, he emphasized that his interest in Test matches is much greater, stating: "In T20 cricket, you don't think about the difficulties; you focus on skills. But in Tests, you think about the challenges and the work done that helps you in some sessions."

Nortje also referred to the competition with Australia, mentioning that he has only faced this team in one Test series in 2022-23, where South Africa lost both matches. He said: "Personally, we always say we want to correct things when we come home. It was a tough series, but I enjoyed it a lot and learned a lot. We wanted to succeed in South Africa, and that is on my mind."

Nortje expects the competition to inspire the best performances among players, adding: "Everyone wants to perform well, and this is a big series."

He noted the team's progress in recent years, saying: "The way the team has progressed under Shukri Conrad (head coach) has been amazing. I hope I can add just 1% or 2% to the team to help out."
