Bruno Fernandes, the captain of Manchester United football team, criticized the coaching staff after the team's 4-1 defeat against Como in the UEFA Champions League and emphasized the need for a change in tactical approach. Michael Carrick, the head coach of Manchester United, also pointed out the lack of motivation and effort from the players, deeming the defeat unacceptable.
Fernandes' Criticism of Tactical Approach
In an interview, Fernandes expressed his criticism of the coaching staff's tactical policies, particularly mentioning the team's pressing strategy. He stated: "It is the coaching staff's decision to avoid man-to-man pressing and sometimes leave empty spaces behind the defensive line." He noted that this approach could give opponents confidence and make it difficult for Manchester United to control the game.
Fernandes continued: "If you give too much ball to these teams, they gradually gain confidence, and this makes it difficult for us to regain possession." He also emphasized that the responsibility for the final results lies with the coaching staff, adding: "This is up to the management and coaching staff, not me."
Carrick's Concerns About Players' Motivation
On the other hand, Michael Carrick responded to Fernandes' criticisms and emphasized the importance of effort and efficiency from the players. He said: "We applied pressure halfway through the second half and ultimately conceded a goal from this tactic. No matter what tactic you adopt, if you don't come back and put in the effort, you won't win." He expressed disappointment with the team's performance, deeming it unacceptable.
Carrick stated that reviewing the coaching staff's decisions is essential, but clearly indicated that players need to show more motivation and commitment. He said: "You can't choose when you want to perform at your best; you have to give your all at every moment."
Manchester United's defeat against Como, which marked the team's second consecutive loss in the UEFA Champions League, has raised serious concerns. This defeat also highlights a worrying trend that Manchester United is experiencing, with seven games without a win across all competitions.
In this match, Como 1907 achieved a decisive victory with goals from Nico Paz and other players. While Paz scored the first goal in the second minute, Tsus Duvikas netted the second goal in the 49th minute, and Paz scored again in the 57th minute. Finally, Jacobo Ramon scored the fourth goal in the 75th minute, with the only early goal for Manchester United coming from Joshua Zirkzee in the closing minutes.
