The street kiosk renovation plan in Cairo, the capital of Egypt, has recently been introduced. These kiosks, known as small sales points on the streets, are currently facing a serious challenge as an integral part of daily life for Cairo's citizens. Cairo officials have given all kiosk owners a three-month deadline to implement the new plan at a cost of between 50,000 and 60,000 Egyptian pounds (equivalent to one thousand to one thousand two hundred dollars).
Concerns About Renovation Costs
Local managers believe that renovating the kiosks will help improve the city's appearance and organize the sidewalks. However, many kiosk owners in economically weak areas are worried about these high costs. Moamen Hassan, one of the local vendors, says: "We definitely want the city to look more beautiful, but the cost of this renovation is unbearable for many of us. Some kiosk owners may be forced to close their businesses."
Everyday Experience and the Importance of Kiosks
Street kiosks, locally known as "koshk," have become a symbol of urban life in Cairo over the years. These small structures are nestled in corners of the city, between old residential blocks and busy intersections. They are usually the first businesses to open in the mornings and the last to close at night. Sabrin Ahmed, a 19-year-old student, has expressed her interest in these kiosks, saying: "I pass by the kiosk almost every day; these kiosks make life easier."
In the new plan, kiosks will be equipped with QR codes that provide information regarding permits and payment records for the public and authorities. The standardized structures, measuring six or nine square meters, will also include equipment such as electric meters and fire extinguishers. This renovation comes at a time when many Egyptians are still grappling with the consequences of past years of severe currency devaluation and rising prices.
To ease the financial burden, officials have announced that licensed kiosk owners can pay 25% of the cost as a down payment, equivalent to 12,500 to 15,000 pounds, and pay the remainder over two years interest-free.
