Canelo Alvarez, the Mexican boxing champion, has emphasized his commitment to holding his fight in Riyadh on October 31, despite recent deadly attacks on Saudi Arabia's infrastructure. This news was announced by Turki Al-Sheikh, the head of the Saudi General Entertainment Authority, who is recognized as one of the most influential figures in the boxing world.

Recent Attacks and Security Situation

Alvarez's fight will take place while last week, missile attacks on King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh resulted in at least 12 deaths and over 300 injuries. Al-Sheikh stated that Alvarez has assured him that despite the unsafe conditions, he remains committed to fighting in Riyadh. He said, "Canelo told me that he will fight in Riyadh under any circumstances and fears nothing."

Challenges Ahead for Alvarez

Alvarez, who has an impressive record of 63 wins, 3 losses, and 2 draws, will face Christian Mbilli, who has won all 29 of his fights so far. Alvarez is looking to return to the ring after his loss to Terence Crawford in September 2025. He stated in an interview that he is ready for this fight and continues his training on the Mediterranean beaches in Spain.

However, the attacks by Houthi rebels from Yemen, who have claimed responsibility for the recent attacks, have raised concerns about the security of this major event. The recent attack on the airport is considered one of the deadliest attacks on a Gulf Arab country since the start of the war with Iran.

Saudi Arabia and Sports Goals

Under Al-Sheikh's leadership, Saudi Arabia has become a major force in the boxing world and is striving to establish itself as a destination for global sports and entertainment events. Major investments in this area have often been accompanied by criticisms related to the country's human rights record. Given the current situation, holding this fight and other major sporting events in Saudi Arabia faces serious security challenges.

Alvarez also responded to questions about his retirement timing, stating that he cannot predict how much longer he will continue to compete, as he feels good and is still competing.
