The 18th BRICS Summit, hosted by India at the Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi, achieved remarkable success due to the extensive diplomacy of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the holding of 15 bilateral meetings with leaders from various countries. Following the completion of these multilateral interactions and high-level diplomatic programs, world leaders and senior international officials began to leave New Delhi on Monday morning.
Departure of Officials from New Delhi
Among the departing leaders were the President of Burundi, Évariste Ndayishimiye, along with the First Lady, Angeline Ndayishimiye, the Foreign Minister of Nigeria, Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, the Foreign Minister of Burundi, Édouard Nduwimana, the Foreign Minister of Brazil, Mauro Vieira, and the Director-General of the World Trade Organization, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala.
Earlier, the President of South Africa, Cyril Ramaphosa, the Secretary-General of the United Nations, António Guterres, the Deputy Prime Minister of Thailand and Foreign Minister, Srettha Thavisin, the President of the Philippines, Ferdinand Marcos Jr., and the Foreign Minister of Belarus, Maksim Ryzhenkov also left New Delhi on Sunday.
Diplomatic Programs and Meetings
The busy agenda of this summit included several private discussions with world leaders and heads of international organizations held on the sidelines of the BRICS sessions as well as in the Outreach and BRICS Plus Dialogue segments. Prime Minister Modi began his diplomacy on Friday afternoon with a meeting with the President of Russia, Vladimir Putin. These meetings continued with bilateral sessions with the President of Iran, Masoud Pezeshkian, and the Secretary-General of the United Nations, António Guterres.
On Saturday, Modi met with the Prime Minister of Ethiopia, Abiy Ahmed Ali, followed by consultations with the Prime Minister of Malaysia, Anwar Ibrahim, the Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi, Sheikh Khaled bin Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, and the Prime Minister of Vietnam, Le Minh Khai. Modi also welcomed the leaders of BRICS member countries at the Bharat Mandapam and spoke at a closed session on "Inclusive Global Governance and Strengthening Multilateralism" at their invitation.
The summit concluded with a gala dinner for officials and special guests, where Modi interacted with the leaders of BRICS partner countries and invitees from Outreach and spoke at a session on "Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation, and Sustainability."
