FIFA released a report on the 2026 World Cup on Friday, highlighting new trends in football, especially anti-pressing and the new role of goalkeepers. This report was prepared by FIFA's Technical Study Group and the Football Performance Insights Department, examining all 104 matches of the tournament.
Tactical Analysis and Innovations in Play
The report analyzes tactical innovations, changing player roles, and new pathways to success at the highest level of football. FIFA has stated that anti-pressing has been identified as a double-edged asset and is considered one of the defining trends of this competition. Top teams have regularly succeeded in converting lost possession into an immediate attacking opportunity.
Goalkeepers are also increasingly being used as active participants in the build-up play, acting as a solution to overcome the opponent's press. FIFA's analysis states that there is no single formula for victory, describing this as "contradictory paths to success"; from high pressing to organized defensive blocks and quick transitions.
Key Topics in FIFA's Report
The report also examines play at every stage of the game, focusing on nine key topics, including building play with three defenders, player rotation in the flanks, exploiting internal channels, advancing through key players, high pressing, anti-pressing, defensive blocks, attacking transitions, and the evolving role of the goalkeeper.
Arsène Wenger, FIFA's Chief of Global Football Development, stated: "The goal is not just to describe what has happened, but to understand why: how teams created and controlled space, how they attacked and defended, how individual roles evolved, and how players' and coaches' decisions impacted various moments of the game."
This report could have profound impacts on training and coaching in professional football and may serve as a reference for coaches and players worldwide. Given recent developments in football, awareness of these trends can help teams achieve greater success.
