Google introduced the Suncatcher project to test the performance of Tensor Processing Units (TPUs) in space. This project is set to evaluate artificial intelligence processing capabilities in space conditions by launching a prototype satellite into orbit.
Details of the Suncatcher Project
The Tensor Processing Unit (TPU) is a custom application-specific integrated circuit designed by Google Cloud to accelerate artificial intelligence and machine learning workloads. Sundar Pichai, CEO of Google, announced in a post: "Can our TPUs survive and operate in space? Right now, we are exploring this question. The Suncatcher project will be launched into space on the Transporter-18 mission, and this satellite has been built in collaboration with various partners."
