We reviewed the progress of the two countries' relations in the fields of trade and investment, education, energy, and defense. We also exchanged views on key regional and global developments."
High-Level Diplomatic Meetings and Contacts
This meeting took place as Anita Anand, the Canadian Foreign Minister, had traveled to India on Tuesday. The Indian Ministry of External Affairs stated in a press release: "A warm welcome to the Canadian Foreign Minister, Anita Anand, during her visit to India. This is Anand's third visit to India since June ٢٠٢٥, reflecting ongoing high-level engagement and positive progress in India-Canada relations."
This meeting provides an opportunity for both sides to advance the bilateral partnership based on recent developments. Additionally, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Canadian counterpart, Mark Carney, also discussed the need to capitalize on this positive trend in the relations between the two countries over the phone last night.
After this phone call, Prime Minister Modi wrote: "I had a warm and constructive conversation with Prime Minister Mark Carney. We emphasized the necessity of advancing India-Canada relations and working towards tangible outcomes in key areas of the strategic partnership, including trade, energy, technology, security, and people-to-people exchanges." He added: "India and Canada are working together towards creating a sustainable and prosperous world."
These discussions come as India's Minister of Commerce and Industry, Piyush Goyal, also met with Canada's Minister of International Trade, Mary Ng, to discuss advancing negotiations on the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) between India and Canada.
Goyal stated: "We discussed advancing the CEPA negotiations, focusing on creating a balanced and mutually beneficial agreement that increases market access and provides new trade and investment opportunities. I am confident that CEPA will accelerate a new wave of bilateral trade and strengthen our economic partnership for mutual prosperity."
Ng also stated that the Canadian delegation will focus on key sectors including aerospace, clean energy, technology, life sciences, agriculture, and forestry. She added: "We are also advancing CEPA negotiations to create more opportunities for Canadian workers and businesses."
Given these positive developments, India and Canada are working on an agreement that will help open more opportunities for businesses and workers.
