Kamala Harris, former Vice President of the United States, warned in her speech at the Aspen Institute in South Korea that the window of opportunity for establishing safety measures in the field of artificial intelligence is closing. Harris urged governments and technology companies to act quickly and stressed the necessity of having AI developers involved in this process.
Serious Dangers Posed by Artificial Intelligence
In her remarks, Harris pointed to three fundamental dangers posed by artificial intelligence: cyber threats, AI-based weapons, and systems that go out of human control. She called for immediate action from governments and companies to address these threats and stated, "My concern is that the window is closing."
The Need for Cooperation Between the U.S. and China
The former Vice President also emphasized the need for cooperation between the United States and China in establishing international rules and standards for artificial intelligence. She stated that broad strategic competition should not hinder collaboration on common threats and added, "There is room for cooperation where our interests align." Harris referred to healthy and strong competition and stressed the need to avoid conflict.
Harris also criticized the irregular tariffs of the previous U.S. administration, particularly during Donald Trump's presidency, and warned against transactional approaches that could affect the global influence of the United States. She said, "The question is whether we are only thinking short-term or whether we are also considering the valuation and importance of investing for long-term benefits?"
South Korea's Investment in the United States
Kamala Harris further mentioned South Korea's investments in areas such as shipbuilding, semiconductors, electric vehicles, and clean energy, describing them as "very important and valuable." She also emphasized the need to strengthen the United States' commitment to South Korea, stating that increased cooperation between North Korea, Russia, China, and Iran has raised serious concerns.
This former official also referred to the Democratic campaigns ahead of the 2026 midterm elections in the United States, stating that Democrats have a good chance of gaining a majority in the House of Representatives and the Senate, which could bring a stronger voice in domestic and foreign policy, especially regarding the war with Iran.
In response to a question about the possibility of her candidacy again in the 2028 presidential election, Harris said, "I am still thinking about this. I have not made a decision yet."
