Marc Marquez on Saturday increased his lead in the MotoGP standings by finishing second in the Sprint race of the Malaysian Grand Prix. This race took place while his rival, Jorge Martin, was unable to continue due to injury.
Details of the Malaysian Grand Prix
Pedro Acosta crossed the finish line with a time of 20 minutes and 4.098 seconds, while Marquez, who rides for the Ducati team, finished second with a gap of 0.578 seconds. Additionally, Marco Bezzecchi from Italy secured third place with a late effort.
Marquez, a seven-time MotoGP champion, was able to extend his lead over Martin by 19 points with this result. Martin, who had secured the championship title in 2024, withdrew from the competition this weekend due to not recovering from a wrist fracture.
Challenges and Risks in the Race
Marquez faced a serious danger at the start of the race and nearly collided with Ai Ogura from Japan in a tight corner. His younger brother, Alex Marquez, who led from the start of the race, went off the track in the third lap due to a slip, allowing Ogura to take the lead.
As light rain fell on the track, Acosta passed Ogura in the seventh lap to take first place. Marquez then competed with Ogura, overtaking him in a tight corner and continued to chase Acosta to the finish line.
Marquez mentioned that he did not enjoy the race, despite strengthening his position in the championship competition. He stated, “I didn’t enjoy this race at all. We really worked today and did what we had to do.” He also added that this track has been challenging for him in the past and mentioned his efforts to improve in the coming days.
Martin's exit from the competition has significantly impacted his hopes of achieving the championship title, as only three weeks remain until the end of the season. Martin, who had been crowned champion in 2024, stated, “Maybe I can win it, but for me, this is a loss. So I will definitely fight until the end.” He also emphasized that he will fight not only for himself but for his team and fans until the end of the competition.
