Marc Márquez, the seven-time world champion, referred to the upcoming final race at Phillip Island in Australia as an emotional farewell. This circuit, recognized as one of the most iconic MotoGP tracks, is nearing the end of its contract after nearly three decades.
History and Features of Phillip Island Circuit
Phillip Island circuit, located a two-hour drive from Melbourne, has been a staple in the MotoGP calendar since 1997. The circuit has attracted many riders due to its coastal location and challenging design. However, the current contract for this circuit has expired, and the organizers plan to move the event to Albert Park in Melbourne. The government of Victoria insists on keeping the race at Phillip Island. With no agreement between the parties, South Australia stepped in and moved the race to Adelaide starting in 2027.
Riders' Emotions in the Final Race
Márquez, who is two points behind Jorge Martín from the Aprilia team in this final race, stated: "Phillip Island is an incredible circuit. Racing here for the last time will be very emotional." He also recalled one of his early victories with the Ducati team, adding: "We are very much prepared for success in this race."
Francesco Bagnaia, Márquez's teammate, has never won at Phillip Island, but his third and second places in 2022 and 2023 have played a significant role in his championships. He said: "This will be the last time at this circuit. A track that holds incredible appeal for me and is full of adrenaline."
With five laps remaining in the season, the championship battle has turned into a three-way fight among Martín, Márquez, and Marco Bezzecchi. Bezzecchi, after winning the recent race in Indonesia, is 44 points behind Márquez. Martín stated: "I am sure that my team and I will do a great job and we will bid farewell to this circuit properly."
Márquez and Martín both missed last year's race in Australia due to injuries, giving Raúl Fernández the opportunity to achieve his first victory in MotoGP. Fernández, who is currently ranked seventh in the standings, said: "I will cry a little. This circuit has brought back many memories for us, and everyone will miss it a bit."
