Mason Crane, the 29-year-old England spin league player, announced that he was surprised by his call-up to the national team for the ODI series in Pakistan. This call-up signifies his return to the national stage after nearly nine years. Crane stated in an interview that he had lost hope of returning to the national team in recent years, but with the return of his motivation, he has re-entered this arena.
Past experiences and new hopes
Crane, who played only three international matches in 2017 and early 2018, continued: "I really didn't expect this to happen. It was a bit sudden, but I am really happy and excited. A few years ago, I felt that I might not get another opportunity and I was putting a lot of pressure on myself. But in recent years, I have found my motivation again."

Performance in domestic leagues in England
Crane's last international match was during the final Test of the England national team in the 2017-2018 Ashes tour in Sydney, where he successfully dismissed Usman Khawaja, the Australian player. Crane has also played in two T20 international matches against South Africa, where his only wicket was that of AB de Villiers, the great South African player.
In 2026, Crane performed well in domestic competitions in England, taking 34 wickets in 14 County Championship matches and 15 wickets in 10 Vitality Blast matches. This strong performance has helped him strengthen his chances of being called up to the national team again.
Crane has also focused on improving his consistency and variety as a spin league player, concentrating on adapting to playing conditions and finding ways to dismiss specific players. He said: "I don't want to be just a player who bowls a good ball every now and then. I aim to adapt to the playing conditions and get the best performance out of the field. Right now, I want to have more variety while also performing better in this area."
England will begin their campaign in the ODI series against Pakistan in Rawalpindi on October 20, and these matches are part of the teams' preparations for the 2027 Men's Cricket World Cup.
