Max Verstappen, the driver for Red Bull Racing, achieved his first pole position of the season by recording a time of 1 minute and 35.130 seconds in the qualifying session for the 2026 Bahrain Grand Prix, which took place today at the Sepang Circuit in Malaysia. This race has been relocated from Bahrain to Malaysia due to security conditions and conflicts in the Middle East.
Relocation of the Bahrain Grand Prix to Malaysia
The 2026 Bahrain Grand Prix, which was scheduled to take place this spring at the Bahrain International Circuit, was canceled due to security conditions and ongoing conflicts in the region. Given the importance of maintaining this event on the Formula One calendar, an agreement was reached between Formula One, the FIA, Bahrain, and Malaysia, resulting in the race being moved to the Sepang Circuit in Malaysia. However, the event will still be recognized as the Bahrain Grand Prix.
Outstanding Performance by Verstappen and Driver Penalties
At the end of an exciting qualifying session, Max Verstappen started strong from Q1 and managed to set the best time in the final stage. Lewis Hamilton, driving for Ferrari, secured second place, just 0.298 seconds behind Verstappen. This result was significant for Hamilton as he achieved one of his best starting positions of the current season.
Isaac Hadjar, also from Red Bull, placed the second car of the team in third position but will start the race from eighth place due to a five-place grid penalty. Consequently, Kimi Antonelli and Charles Leclerc will occupy higher positions on the starting grid.
Kimi Antonelli, who was the fastest driver in the third practice session, performed well in qualifying as well, finishing fourth with a time of 1:35.631. He faced pressure due to exceeding track limits in Q2 and had to set another quick lap, which resulted in the use of an additional set of soft tires.
Overall, the qualifying results indicate that the main competition at the start of the race will be among Red Bull, Ferrari, Mercedes, and McLaren. However, Hadjar's penalty has altered the composition of the front rows compared to the raw qualifying results.
All eyes are now on the race on Sunday, where Verstappen will start from the front row alongside Hamilton. Verstappen is expected to have the opportunity to convert his first pole position of the season into a victory at the Bahrain Grand Prix (Malaysia). The race is scheduled to take place at 15:00 local time in Sepang.
