Max Verstappen, the driver for Red Bull Racing, secured his first pole position of the 2026 season with a flawless performance at the Sepang International Circuit. Lewis Hamilton, the seven-time world champion, is also on the front row next to Verstappen in his Ferrari, setting the stage for an exciting battle on race day.

Return of the Sepang Circuit to Formula One

The Sepang International Circuit is hosting Formula One races again after a nine-year wait. This beautiful and technical circuit is located in the outskirts of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, and has replaced the Bahrain races due to regional issues. The humid weather and high temperatures present unique challenges for the drivers, and tire management will be key to victory in these conditions.

Verstappen showed in Friday's practice that he is fully prepared to win at this new circuit, taking control of the race from the very beginning. With a stunning performance in qualifying, he confidently secured pole position. This is the first time in the 2026 season that a car with a non-Mercedes engine has topped the qualifying session.

Competition Among the Giants of Formula One

Lewis Hamilton recorded an excellent time to qualify second and stood alongside Verstappen on the front row. The rivalry between these two Formula One legends has always been captivating, and now that they are in rival teams, the excitement of the race has intensified. Isaac Hajar, Verstappen's teammate, qualified third but will start from a lower position due to a grid penalty for an engine change.

The championship leader, Kimi Antonelli, made a mistake in the second qualifying session and went off the track. This error led to increased tire usage and prevented him from securing the top spot. The McLaren team has also faced a drop in speed, with Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri qualifying in the mid-field. George Russell also failed to meet expectations, finishing in seventh place.

The Aston Martin team, with strong performances from Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll, successfully advanced both cars to the second qualifying session for the first time this season. Meanwhile, the Cadillac team had a disappointing day, with Valtteri Bottas and Sergio Perez finishing at the bottom of the grid.
