Zahraan Mamdani, the 34-year-old Mayor of New York, was recognized this week as one of the intriguing figures for global leaders present at the United Nations. Having started his term as mayor on January 1, he engaged in discussions about artificial intelligence with Jonas Gahr Støre, the Prime Minister of Norway, while riding the subway with Micheál Martin, the Prime Minister of Ireland, and exchanged football shirts with Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, the President of Brazil.

Political Meetings and Challenges

Mamdani met with global leaders under circumstances where these meetings were primarily held with political figures aligned with him. He also had breakfast with Pedro Sánchez, the President of Spain, Mia Mottley, the Prime Minister of Barbados, and António Costa, the President of the European Council. Costa told Mamdani during this meeting: "You have the best job among politicians because you can solve problems quickly." On the other hand, Mamdani was in the spotlight during Benjamin Netanyahu's speech at the UN General Assembly. Netanyahu responded to Mamdani's remarks about Israel's war crimes in Gaza and challenged him.

Political Tensions and Social Messages

Mamdani had promised during his election campaign that if Netanyahu were to come to New York, he would arrest him due to war crime allegations. However, he concluded that legally this action was not feasible. This week, Mamdani described Netanyahu as the "architect of a horrific genocide against Palestinians." The night before Netanyahu's arrival, Mamdani published a video of himself planting an olive tree in Gracie Mansion with Palestinian families, writing: "I hope peace will be our future." In response to Mamdani's remarks, Netanyahu stated in his speech at the UN: "Israel has not committed genocide; rather, Israel has prevented genocide." Mamdani strongly reacted to these statements, saying: "Netanyahu is trying to wash away his crimes by repeating baseless lies. No lie can change the reality that he is being pursued by the International Criminal Court for war crimes and crimes against humanity."
