Microsoft confirmed on Monday that it has exited the agreement related to the establishment of an AI data center in the UK with startup Nscale. This move harms the future of AI programs in the country.

Final Agreement and Challenges

The American tech giant had made an agreement last year to lease computing capacity from Nscale, which is backed by chipmaking giant Nvidia, at a data center that was to be established in Loughton, northeast London. A Microsoft spokesperson stated that "this decision pertains to a specific site" and added that the company is committed to its partnership with Nscale.

Impacts on the Future of AI in the UK

This agreement, alongside a series of multi-billion dollar investments from American tech giants during former President Donald Trump's official visit to the UK, was introduced as a step to transform the country into a superpower in artificial intelligence. Former Prime Minister Keir Starmer referred to this center as "the largest independent AI data center in the UK." However, some data center projects have faced challenges due to concerns over high electricity prices and long connection times to the UK power grid.

A spokesperson for Nscale stated: "We are committed to the Loughton project and the UK, and we are exploring alternative energy sources for this site, as well as reviewing other expansion sites in the UK." They also expressed that "our relationship with Microsoft remains strong and long-term, and this major network issue in London does not affect our other contracts." British media reported that power grid officials have informed Nscale that this site will not have access to electricity until the 2030s.

This news comes as Nscale prepares for an initial public offering on the New York Stock Exchange, reportedly targeting a valuation of $35 billion. In its IPO filing, Nscale indicated that "a significant portion of our committed revenue comes from a limited number of clients with large contracts," which include Microsoft and American AI giant Anthropic. The Loughton agreement is only a small part of Microsoft's contracts with Nscale.

Earlier this year, ChatGPT maker OpenAI also exited its partnership with Nscale and Nvidia to create a UK version of Stargate—a large-scale AI infrastructure initiative. OpenAI cited high energy costs and regulatory uncertainties as reasons for its exit. Meeting the energy needs of large data centers requires major infrastructure upgrades, leading to delays in connections.

UK Power Networks, which does not disclose information about individual connections, announced on Monday: "Many data centers, while they can connect to our distribution network, are waiting for work to be done on the national transmission network, which we do not own."
