Mike Baird has resigned from his position as Chairman and CEO of Cricket Australia. This decision was made following tensions over the proposal to privatize the Big Bash League. David Boon, a former Australian cricket player, will be appointed as interim chairman at the organization's general meeting in late October.

Reasons for Resignation

Baird, who previously served as the Premier of New South Wales, informed the Cricket Australia board that after losing the support of his state regarding efforts to attract private investment to the Big Bash League, he no longer wishes to seek re-election. He has served as Chairman of Cricket Australia since February 2023.

In a statement, Baird said: "After much consideration, I have decided to step down from my role as Chairman and CEO of Cricket Australia. I am pleased that David Boon has agreed to serve as interim chairman, and I will work with him on the transition process in the coming weeks."

Future Challenges and Perspectives

Baird and Todd Greenberg, the CEO of Cricket Australia, were attempting to introduce private investment into the Big Bash League under a "self-determination" model, which allows each state to chart its own course. However, New South Wales has been strongly opposed to this plan and has emphasized the need to explore other methods for increasing revenue.

The Cricket Australia board earlier this month approved the privatization process for the Big Bash League, and Melbourne Renegades is expected to be the first club to be sold by the end of the year. Baird also stated that his departure would not affect his assessment of Cricket Australia's direction and expressed hope for the growth and future success of the sport.

Boon, who has played 107 Tests for Australia, has previously served as an ICC match official and was a member of the Australian selection panel from 2000 to 2011. He commented: "It is a great honor to serve as interim chairman of Cricket Australia at such an exciting and challenging time. I aim to lead the Cricket Australia board in making decisions that ensure the long-term health and prosperity of the game."
