NVIDIA has announced a $250 million investment over five years aimed at strengthening the safety and security of artificial intelligence (AI) research in the UK. This initiative is part of the company's strategy to support research in AI safety.
Financial Support and Computational Resources
As part of this initiative, NVIDIA will allocate $50 million annually to computational resources to support AI safety and security research in the UK. A significant portion of this budget will be dedicated to a broader research community, while part of it will be allocated to the BOLD and SOFAIR laboratories, as well as Imperial College London.
Advancements in AI Safety
NVIDIA has stated that these computational resources will be dedicated to research aimed at improving the safety and security of AI systems that can perform tasks with a degree of autonomy. Jensen Huang, founder and CEO of NVIDIA, emphasized, "The capabilities and safety of AI must advance in parallel." He also pointed to the strong scientific expertise in the UK regarding AI research and stated that this investment will help researchers develop effective safety measures for more powerful AI systems.
This initiative will involve collaboration among various research institutions working on different aspects of AI safety and development. The BOLD laboratory, operating under the University of Oxford, focuses on developing methods that help AI systems learn, adapt, and work alongside humans. Additionally, the SOFAIR laboratory, led by University College London, examines open-source AI architectures and ways to facilitate the development and deployment of AI.
Meanwhile, Imperial College London will focus on safety engineering and robotics as part of broader research efforts.
The UK Minister for AI, Kanishka Narian, described this investment as a vote of confidence in the country’s AI research capabilities and emphasized that the importance of AI safety increases as the capabilities of AI systems advance. He added, "NVIDIA's funding allows AI innovators in the UK to access the necessary resources and, in the process, contribute to building a safe and secure future for AI in the UK."
