Poland is seeking to strengthen its economic and strategic relations with India following the finalization of the free trade agreement between India and the European Union (FTA). Warsaw views this agreement as an opportunity to expand trade, investment, and cooperation across Central and Eastern Europe.

Polish Prime Minister's Visit to New Delhi

The Polish government sent its Prime Minister, Donald Tusk, to New Delhi on October 21, 2026, leading a delegation of nearly 100 companies to bolster the economic relations between the two countries. This visit is considered the first official trip by a Polish Prime Minister to India since 2010 and follows the finalization of negotiations regarding the EU-India trade agreement on January 27, 2026.

Trade Agreement and Its Impacts

Negotiations for this agreement began in 2007 but were halted in 2013 and then resumed in 2022. This agreement connects two economic blocs that account for about a quarter of global GDP. The European Commission predicts that EU goods exports to India will double by 2032, and tariffs on 96.6% of goods will be eliminated or reduced. This agreement will also improve access to India's service market and includes a quota-based system for automotive trade.

The agreement is set to be signed in December in Brussels, with implementation targeted for early 2027, pending necessary approvals, including the European Parliament's consent. This agreement is being signed at a time when India and Europe are seeking to diversify supply chains and reduce strategic dependencies, especially in response to U.S. tariff policies and China's export controls.

In 2024, bilateral trade between Poland and India reached approximately $5.7 billion, making Poland India's largest trading and investment partner in Central and Eastern Europe. However, bilateral trade still remains at a lower level compared to India's trade with Germany and France.
