Pope Leo noted in this directive: "The conflicts that have occurred in recent years in the Middle East have had their impact on the dialogue between Jews and Christians." This directive, prepared by three high-ranking offices of the Vatican and approved by the Pope, emphasizes the importance of continuing interfaith dialogues and states that "many communication channels have come under pressure, but the pillars of dialogue among believers, built on 60 years of joint efforts, remain strong."

This directive also emphasizes the joint struggle of Jews and Christians against anti-Semitism and refers to Islamophobic attitudes that "ignore the differences" between instances of extremist violence and the everyday lives of Muslims. Pope Leo, recognized as the first pope born in the United States, has previously criticized the Iran war, which led to strong reactions from President Donald Trump on social media.
The new directive was issued on the anniversary of a church document from 1965, widely recognized for improving historical relations between Jews and Christians.
