Rory McIlroy (Rory McIlroy) faced a two-stroke penalty at the end of the first round of the Abu Dhabi Championship on Thursday due to a rules violation. This penalty was imposed while Francesco Laporta (Francesco Laporta) from Italy reached the top of the leaderboard.

Details of McIlroy's Violation

Officials announced that McIlroy improved his position on the 12th hole when he pressed the grass adjacent to his ball with his club. He initially recorded a double bogey on this hole, but after the penalty was applied, this performance turned into eight strokes, and he finished with a score of two under par (70). This left him eight strokes behind Laporta, who is striving for his eighth title in the Race to Dubai.

McIlroy's Reaction to the Penalty

In response to the penalty, McIlroy stated: "I had no intention. I play by the rules of the game and try to do everything in a way that I never find myself in such situations." He also added: "It seems from the video that the situation doesn't look good. I was just trying to get a good feel for the ball's position. I don't feel like I pressed, but at the same time, I don't want others to think that I was trying to escape something." Accepting his two-stroke penalty, McIlroy hopes for the upcoming events of the tournament.

Laporta's Superior Performance

Francesco Laporta reached the top of the leaderboard with a flawless record, registering eight birdies and one eagle, finishing with a score of 62, three strokes ahead of his competitors, including Jon Rahm (Jon Rahm) and Bernd Wiesberger (Bernd Wiesberger). Jon Rahm, who recently left LIV Golf and joined this tournament, had not participated in any competition since September after the birth of his daughter.

Laporta and Other Competitors' Future

Francesco Laporta, in pursuit of his first victory on the European Tour, is also looking to break into the top 50 players to qualify for the tour's final event in Dubai next week. Regarding his performance, he said: "Everything was going like a video game, with straight shots and creating multiple opportunities."

Meanwhile, Eugenio Chacarra (Eugenio Chacarra), who currently leads the Race to Dubai, joined McIlroy with the same score of 70. Patrick Reed (Patrick Reed), who is in second place, had a tough day and finished with two strokes over par.
