Shadman Islam scored 99 not out, leading Bangladesh to a total of 213/3 at the end of Day 1 of their first Test against West Indies in the ICC Test Championship in Mirpur.

Shadman's performance against the opponent's attack

After Bangladesh opted to bat first, Shadman stood firm as the backbone of the innings against West Indies' disciplined bowling attack, helping his team recover from early setbacks. He is closing in on his century, and Bangladesh is looking to build a significant first total.

West Indies' shaky start

West Indies started with promise, using quick movements and variable bounce to put pressure on Bangladesh's top order. Jayden Seales brought the first breakthrough when Tanzid Hasan was caught at slip by Justin Greaves for 7 runs.

Shadman remained confident in the field, skillfully rotating the strike and capitalizing on loose deliveries. Mominul Haque, who scored 28 runs, attempted to attack the bowlers but was dismissed trying to hit Jomel Warrican to mid-off.

Shadman celebrated reaching his tenth half-century at 35 with a single off Seales. He continued to accumulate runs, trying to take control of the innings.

Captain Najmul Hossain Shanto also showed positive intent but failed to convert his good start into a significant score. Warrican claimed his second wicket when Shanto attempted a paddle shot and was out leg-before-wicket for 19 runs.

These two players led Bangladesh to tea at 177/3, registering an unbroken 67-run partnership for the fourth wicket. Shadman was on 79 runs and Hridoy on 36 runs.

Hridoy, who reached 42 runs, had to leave the field on a stretcher due to cramping in the hot conditions, causing a halt in Bangladesh's progress in the final session of play.

Shadman continued to play with patience and determination as he approached the nineties while the hosts sought to strengthen their position. However, poor light led to a 50-minute stoppage in play. The game resumed temporarily, but after another four overs, the day's play ended.

Bangladesh will start Day 2 at 213/3, with Shadman going to bat on 99 runs, as the hosts look to convert this promising start into a strong first total.

The first Test in this series will be held from November 5 to 9 in Sylhet.
