Shubman Gill, captain of the Indian national cricket team, led his team to victory in the second ODI against the West Indies national cricket team with an outstanding performance, breaking several records. By scoring the fastest double century in ODI history, he not only shattered previous records but also guided India to its greatest chase in this format of cricket.
Exceptional Performance by Gill and Teammates
In this match held in Guwahati, Shubman Gill, alongside Rohit Sharma, formed an incredible 255-run partnership for India. Gill scored 208 runs off 149 balls, setting the record for the fastest double century in ODI history. This double century was achieved in 117 balls and included 24 fours and 7 sixes. At the end of the match, Gill remained unbeaten with 223 runs off 133 balls, along with 26 fours and 8 sixes, marking the third-highest ODI score.
Historic Record-Breaking
The Indian captain broke the previous record held by Ishan Kishan, who scored a double century against Bangladesh in 126 balls. Now, with two double centuries, Gill is recognized as the second player in ODI history, alongside Rohit Sharma, to have multiple double centuries in this format. Additionally, he is the only second player after Glenn Maxwell to score a double century while chasing.
Shubman Gill is also recognized as the first player in history to score a double century as a captain in two different formats (Test and ODI). Last year, he scored 269 runs in a Test match during the historic series against England.
In this match, India chose to field first after winning the toss, but despite the toss win, they could not prevent the opponent's stunning performance. John Campbell (101 off 68 balls), Shai Hope (104 off 94 balls), and Ameer Jangoo (114 off 77 balls) helped the West Indies team reach the highest ODI score in history, which is 405/7.
This historic victory for India, with contributions from Gill, Rohit Sharma, and other players, is recorded as the greatest chase in ODI history. India achieved victory by 8 wickets, sending a strong message about the capabilities of the Indian national cricket team on the global stage.
