Shukri Conrad, head coach of the South African national cricket team, expressed optimism about Australia's hosting of a three-match Test series as part of the World Test Championship (WTC), announcing the start of the competition on October 9 in Durban. This series will pit the two teams against each other again after South Africa defeated Australia by five wickets in the WTC 2025 final at Lord's.

Exciting matches and a reminder of past victories

Conrad described these matches as more than just a regular series, referencing his team's past victories against Australia. He said: "Every series against Australia is worth the wait, especially since this time it is being held at home." He added: "We haven't had international cricket in South Africa for almost two years, and we are definitely looking forward to playing in front of our home crowd."

A different experience with three-match series

Conrad also pointed out the differences between three-match and two-match series, stating: "A three-match series is very different from a single match. This is our first three-match series in a long time, and it will be a real test for us." He emphasized the importance of learning from past experiences, saying: "From all the lessons we've learned from the final and our victory, we hope to work on their weaknesses."

The matches between these two teams in the red-ball format took place in late 2022 and early 2023, where Australia won the series 2-0 against South Africa. Currently, both teams are at the top of the WTC standings and are vying for a spot in next year's final at The Oval.

Timeline and importance of the competition

This three-match series will include three matches, the first of which will take place from October 9 to 13 in Durban, the second from October 18 to 22 in Gqeberha, and the third from October 27 to 31 in Cape Town. With Australia currently at the top of the table with eight wins from ten matches and South Africa in second place with a points percentage of 75%, these matches could be decisive for both teams in this WTC cycle.
