SpaceX is accelerating the expansion of its artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure and has set a goal to achieve 13 gigawatts (GW) of computing capacity by the end of 2027. This initiative is driven by the increasing demand for computing power from major technology companies, which continues to exceed the existing supply.

Projected Capacity Increase

According to recent reports, SpaceX has significantly exceeded its initial estimates, particularly due to strong demand for leasing AI computing capacity. The company is looking to add about 10 gigawatts of new capacity by the end of 2027, which represents a substantial increase compared to the previous forecast of 2.5 to 3 gigawatts.

Future Expectations and Investments

Elon Musk has stated that the demand for SpaceX's computing capacity is so strong that the company could sell its capacity multiple times. He also expects spot rental rates to increase significantly, which could reduce the payback period for investments to about six months next year.

Reports suggest that SpaceX could reach a capacity of 20 gigawatts by 2027, provided that power generation resources are available. Based on an approximately equal split between capacity reserved for internal use and leased to customers, the company's infrastructure could support annual recurring revenue (ARR) between $500 billion to $1 trillion by the end of 2027, compared to the $100 billion projected for the end of 2026.

This expansion requires significant investments. SpaceX has projected that capital expenditures will rise to $35 to $40 billion in the fourth quarter of 2026, up from $19.6 billion in the third quarter.

Estimates indicate that the company will need to spend about $350 billion to achieve its goal of 13 gigawatts of capacity. There has also been significant growth in SpaceX's AI-related business, with revenue from cloud services and AI infrastructure rising to $7.6 billion in the third quarter.
