Rawalpindi: Kusal Mendis, captain of the Sri Lankan national cricket team, referred to his team's historic victory against England by chasing 430 runs as a sign of the character and high confidence of the players, stating that he enjoyed this experience as captain.

Outstanding Performance of Sri Lankan Players

This historic match began with a record-breaking performance by Harry Brook, the England captain, who became the first English player to score a double century in ODI history. However, the Sri Lankan players delivered an extraordinary display, securing the record for the highest chase in ODI history and ultimately winning with 430 runs.

In this match, Pavan Rathnayake scored a century, and explosive innings from Avishka Fernando, Dasun Shanaka, and Janith Liyanage played a key role in this victory. This win also marked England's second defeat in this series, which also includes Pakistan.

Match Details and Record Breakings

Initially, Sri Lanka chose to field against England. England set up a strong start with Thomas Banton (50 off 51 balls) and Ben Duckett (29 off 39 balls), but after losing these two players, they fell to 85/2. Subsequently, Harry Brook and Joe Root (69 off 66 balls) kept England's hopes alive with a partnership of 159 runs.

Root also made history by becoming the first English player to reach 8,000 runs in ODI history. Ultimately, England finished their innings at 429/4, where Harry Brook scored 202 runs off 116 balls, supported by a half-century from Will Jacks (66* off 30 balls).

On the Sri Lankan side, Dunith Wellalage had the best performance with 2/56, while Eshan Malinga and Dilshan Madushanka faced challenges against the opponent's batting.

During the chase, Sri Lanka faced a weak start, falling to 24/2, with Kusal Mendis and Kamindu Mendis quickly dismissed. However, Avishka Fernando (97 off 83 balls) and Pavan Rathnayake formed a partnership of 166 runs for the third wicket, restoring hope to the team.

Pavan, with his career-best performance (130 off 106 balls) and a partnership of 133 runs with Dasun Shanaka (97 off 50 balls), brought Sri Lanka close to victory. At the moment Shanaka was dismissed, Sri Lanka still needed 67 runs in 6 overs, and Janith Liyanage (61* off 27 balls), supporting the lower-order players, created a miracle.
