Sunil Gavaskar, the cricket legend of India, at the event "An Evening with Legends: Empathy in Action" in Bangalore, recalled two mistakes by Gary Sobers, the legend of Western Dees, which gave him a second chance in his professional career. Gavaskar mentioned that these moments allowed him to join the work of Sai Sanjeevani hospitals, which provide free surgeries to children with congenital heart defects.

Critical Moments at the Start of His Career

Gavaskar went on to mention his first Test match against Western Dees, stating that at the time he was batting, Sobers dropped a simple catch at slip. This opportunity allowed him to continue playing and eventually score his first half-century in his Test match.

He also noted that in the next match, Sobers missed another opportunity that had a significant impact on the continuation of his career. Gavaskar emphasized the importance of the opportunity he received at that time, saying, "Back then, you had only one or two chances, and if you missed them, you could be out of the team."

Connection to Charitable Work

Gavaskar discussed the work of Sai Sanjeevani hospitals, stating that these centers provide free heart surgeries to children from financially disadvantaged families. He added, "This second chance is related to the work we do here - where children with congenital heart defects receive free surgeries and regain a new life. This is a new life that can turn them into effective citizens of the country."

Gavaskar also referred to the medical teams and their high success rates, stating that the hospitals have a success rate of over 99 percent. He said, "Considering that we operate on children's hearts, we really need to assess the extraordinary skills of our doctors and supporting staff."

He went on to discuss his experience in this project and its connection to cricket, describing it as the most meaningful phase of his life. Gavaskar added, "This is my third term, and it has been the most meaningful period for me so far. I have been blessed to represent my country for 17 years in various games, including Test and One Day matches."
