Vincent Kompany, the 40-year-old coach of Bayern Munich, was transferred to the hospital on Friday after collapsing during training. Bayern Munich announced that Kompany is under medical care due to his poor physical condition and is undergoing a full examination.
Details of the Incident
Bayern Munich stated in a release: "Vincent Kompany had to seek medical care on Friday after collapsing during a training session with the Bayern second team." This incident occurred while Kompany had missed training for several days prior due to a virus. He mentioned in a press conference before the match against Arsenal in the UEFA Champions League that he was feeling fatigued and unwell due to this virus.
Health Priority
Bayern Munich's sporting director, Max Eberl, stated that the health of the club's coach is a priority. He said: "We at Bayern Munich will do everything we can to ensure that he recovers quickly. Vinnie (Kompany) is receiving all necessary medical care and support and will have enough time to recover."
In Kompany's absence, English coach Aaron Danks took charge of training and the pre-match press conference against Arsenal. He commented on Kompany's condition: "It’s a virus, and he needs to rest. The most important thing is that he gives himself enough time to recover."
Bayern Munich is currently at the top of the Bundesliga table and will face Freiburg on Saturday. Additionally, their next match in the UEFA Champions League will be on November 3 in Madrid against Atletico Madrid. Atletico also wished Kompany a speedy recovery through social media and expressed hope that he would be back with the team in the coming days.
Kompany, who started his professional career with Anderlecht in Brussels, later joined Hamburg and then Manchester City, where he became a key figure in the club. As captain of City for eight seasons, he achieved significant success and eventually returned to Anderlecht in 2019 to work as a player-coach. In 2022, he became the head coach of Burnley, leading the team to the Championship title in 2023.
Bayern Munich unexpectedly signed Kompany as head coach in 2024. In his first two seasons, he led the team to the Bundesliga title and also won the DFB-Pokal in 2026. In 74 Bundesliga matches under Kompany, Bayern achieved 57 victories and suffered only three defeats.
Kompany also received his MBA from Manchester Business School in 2018. Max Eberl commented on Kompany's personal and professional qualities: "The way he combines coaching abilities and personal traits is exceptional. He is always friendly and open and knows what he wants and how to implement it on the field."
