The Syrian Foreign Minister, Asaad Al-Shibani, visited Latakia International Airport on Friday. This airport, which hosts Russian military forces, is considered one of the key points in the agreement between Damascus and Moscow for the handover of air and naval bases.
Planning for the Handover of Bases
The purpose of this visit was to ensure progress on the agreement signed between Syria and Russia in August. In this agreement, Russia committed to handing over its facilities in Syria to the Damascus government. During this visit, Al-Shibani, along with the Chief of Staff of the Syrian Armed Forces, Ali Al-Nassaan, and the Commander of the Air Force, Asem Hawari, reviewed the current status of the airport.

Meeting with Russian Officials
During this visit, Al-Shibani met with several Russian officials at the airport. Published images from this meeting show the Syrian Foreign Minister conversing with Russian officers. This meeting was held to review the details of the August agreement and plan for the next stages.
The Russian Ministry of Defense has not yet commented on this visit. Meanwhile, it seems that both parties are trying to expedite the implementation of their agreements.
Due to the wartime conditions and internal political crisis, Syria needs Russian support in military and economic matters. This agreement allows Damascus to have greater control over its military bases while strengthening its relations with Moscow.
