Passenger car sales in India are projected to rise by 15 to 16 percent in September due to steady demand. This increase comes as manufacturers implement selective price increases across the sector to address input cost pressures.
Positive Growth in the Domestic Car Market
The domestic retail car market continues to move positively across all segments except tractors, driven by strong channel confidence ahead of the festive season. According to experts, the automotive industry is generally facing double-digit growth across all segments (except tractors), although weak rainfall is recognized as a new risk for volumes.

Challenges from Irregular Rainfall Distribution
However, the irregular distribution of rainfall in several regions is considered a significant operational risk for expanding retail volumes. Channel confidence in positive growth during the festive season remains strong despite some caution regarding uncertainties related to rainfall.
In the passenger car segment, portfolio updates support dealership volumes. Additionally, the broader sector is implementing price increases in the range of 0.3 to 0.4 percent to pass on raw material inflation. The recent launch of CNG-AMT vehicles could help accelerate the adoption of CNG in private urban markets.
In the bicycle segment, urban markets show stronger traction compared to rural areas. Urban bicycle retail growth is expected to reach 15 percent this month, while retail growth in rural areas decreases between 8 to 10 percent. This decline is attributed to irregular rainfall patterns and calendar-related factors such as the onset of Adik Mas.
In the commercial vehicle sector, inquiry lines have remained stable despite the usual seasonal softness in September retail. Original equipment manufacturers are actively updating dealership network inventories from existing levels of 20 to 22 days to about 30 days.
On the other hand, the tractor segment is facing a slow period. Retail growth in September is expected to drop to flat levels or low single digits, as the ongoing shortage of rainfall in northern and eastern regions reduces confidence among rural buyers ahead of the festive season.
