Andrea Egan, General Secretary of the Unison union, called for equal political attention to public sector workers, including healthcare, education, and care staff from the UK government. She stated that workers in these sectors are often regarded as a "secondary issue" compared to the "massive political attention" given to North Sea oil and gas workers.
Attention to Public Sector Workers
Egan emphasized: "Undoubtedly, providing secure and well-paid jobs for oil and gas workers is essential, but in contrast, public service staff seem to be a secondary issue for ministers. Who is paying attention to the thousands of jobs that have been lost in recent years in local authorities, the NHS, and education? What about care workers, nurses, and teaching assistants?"

Controversial Decision on the Jackdaw Gas Field
Recently, the government's decision to establish the Jackdaw gas field, following heavy pressure from the fossil fuel industry and right-wing politicians, has drawn attention once again. This decision has led to anger among environmental activists and scientists, who believe that further fossil fuel extraction will exacerbate the crisis and will not help reduce costs or improve energy security.
Egan called this decision "a serious mistake by the government" and stated that this action sends a wrong signal about the UK's climate commitments. She suggested that ministers should focus on creating secure and well-paid jobs in the renewable energy sector instead of these decisions and support the millions of public sector employees who have faced severe cuts in recent years.
Differences of Opinion Among Unions
Among the major unions in Britain, views on allowing fossil fuel companies to drill in the North Sea vary. The unions "Unite" and "GMB," which represent many oil and gas workers, support issuing more licenses, while Unison and the National Education Union oppose this action and emphasize creating sustainable jobs and addressing the climate crisis.
Agreement with Octopus Energy
Last week, Unison announced that a new agreement had been signed with the largest energy company in Britain, Octopus Energy. This company is recognized as a leading organization in renewable energy. Egan stated that this agreement is an important step towards securing good and safe jobs in the renewable energy sector.
She said: "Unison is proud to be at the forefront of the clean energy union. We urgently need good union jobs, and we must quickly move away from fossil fuels. This agreement is a step forward in both areas."
