The Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant, Bangladesh's first nuclear power plant, reached a critical stage on Friday, marking a significant milestone in the path to electricity generation. Faruque Mahfuz Anam, the Minister of Science and Technology of Bangladesh, announced that electricity production may begin within the next two to three weeks.

Electricity Production and Timeline

Bangladeshi officials have announced that electricity generated from the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant will enter the national grid in the last week of November. This plant is being constructed to meet the country's energy needs and is expected to have significant positive economic and social impacts.

Project Details and International Collaborations

The Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant is located in the village of Rooppur beside the Padma River in the Pakshi Union of Ishwardi, Pabna District. This project is being executed with technical cooperation from the Russian state nuclear energy corporation (Rosatom) and under the supervision of the Bangladesh Atomic Energy Commission. The project includes the construction of two third-generation VVER-1200 reactor units, which will collectively produce 2400 megawatts of base electricity.

Bangladesh has officially entered the nuclear era, and the initial shipment of low-enriched uranium fuel for the first unit of the Rooppur plant has been safely imported from Russia. This shipment includes 164 fuel assemblies that were transported directly from the Novosibirsk Chemical Plant in Russia to Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka by a Russian cargo plane. This shipment was transferred to the plant site in Ishwardi, Pabna, under strict international supervision.

Security and Oversight for Fuel Transfer

The fuel shipment was transported to the plant site using a green corridor and under heavy protection by the Bangladesh Army and law enforcement agencies, with the official handover ceremony taking place in October 2023. These security and oversight measures demonstrate Bangladesh's commitment to adhering to international standards in nuclear safety and the peaceful use of nuclear energy.

With the achievement of this critical stage, Bangladesh is seriously moving towards sustainable energy supply and reducing dependence on fossil fuels. This project will not only help meet the country's energy needs but will also significantly contribute to the development of technology and technical skills in Bangladesh.
