Brendon McCullum, head coach of the England white-ball cricket team, has announced that he wants Kevin Pietersen, the newly appointed specialist coach and former player of the team, to privately challenge him in various areas. This request has been made on the eve of the start of the white-ball series against Sri Lanka.
Beginning collaboration with Pietersen
Kevin Pietersen, the former England cricket legend who was recognized as a key player for the team between 2004 and 2014, is set to work as a specialist coach for the England cricket team starting this week. In his 277 international matches, he scored 13,797 runs and made 32 centuries for England. Pietersen was named the best player of the T20 World Cup in 2010 and played a vital role in his team's victory.

McCullum stated in an interview with reporters: "When I contacted Pietersen and asked him to work with us as a coach, he initially thought I was joking! He referred to his criticisms of our past performances, and I told him that I had no problem with that. This is part of our learning process, and I want him to challenge me privately. I don't want him to be limited to a specific skill; rather, I want him to look at the entire team structure and suggest ways to improve."
Past criticisms and positive impact
Pietersen has previously made sharp criticisms of the England team's performance during the white-ball tour to India in early 2025. He criticized the team's lack of preparedness to face the challenging conditions in India, especially against spin bowlers. These criticisms clearly reflect his concern for the improvement and progress of the England team.
McCullum went on to praise Pietersen, describing him as a player with an "incredible track record." He also noted that many current team members grew up watching Pietersen's games, and he has always been a role model for them.
