The animated film 'Wildwood', directed by Travis Knight, depicts an engaging and thrilling story in which a young girl named Pro travels to an enchanted forest in search of her brother, who has been kidnapped by a group of crows. This film took 16 years to reach the cinema and uses stop-motion animation techniques, beautifully honoring human creativity in the age of artificial intelligence.
Celebrating Human Creativity
Travis Knight, the director and CEO of Laika Studio, stated: "This film is the result of the efforts of hundreds of artists and creators who spent years of their lives crafting the most beautiful story possible. This is something that computers will never be able to do." Knight added: "This film is a festival of human creativity because what you see in this film is art and human effort on a grand scale." He also emphasized that computers have never experienced emotions such as love, sadness, and joy.

A Story of Adventure and Discovery
The film 'Wildwood' follows Pro McKeel, voiced by Paiton Elizabeth Lee, who along with her friend Curtis, voiced by Jacob Tremblay, explores a wondrous world where wishes and sorrows can turn into a great conflict. Knight explained this story by saying: "This is a grand and fantastical tale, but it also addresses mature themes and deep emotions that each of us has experienced at different stages of our lives."
Paiton Elizabeth Lee, the actress playing Pro, stated that Pro's journey reminds her of her own teenage years, saying: "I didn't go to a magical forest, but I feel that the idea of a young person feeling grown-up yet questioning everything is relatable."
To create the characters in this animation, the actors' movements were filmed while recording their dialogues so that animators could translate their behaviors into the characters. Other actors such as Angela Bassett, Carey Mulligan, Mahershala Ali, and Awkwafina also appear in this film. Brad Schiff, the animation supervisor, mentioned that the subtle facial movements depicted in this film were not possible just a few years ago.
The film 'Wildwood' is based on a book of the same name written by Colin Meloy, reflecting the love for the city of Portland, where Laika Studio is based. Knight said in this regard: "The more specific and intimate something is, the more universal it ultimately becomes."
