The 2023 Asian Games in Japan will conclude on Sunday, after two weeks of sporting competitions marked by record-breaking performances from young talents, but overshadowed by issues such as disruptions, low attendance, and allegations of mismanagement.

Widespread Participation of Athletes

More than 17,000 athletes and officials, exceeding the number of Olympic athletes, came to the Nagoya region and Aichi Prefecture for this major continental sports event. Among them, the 13-year-old Chinese swimmer, Yu Zidi, drew attention with three gold medals in record times. He is considered one of the main threats for a medal at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.

Management Challenges and Infrastructure Issues

This year's games, which mark the twentieth edition of the event, faced numerous challenges due to a lack of facilities, including the absence of a traditional athletes' village. Instead, participants were accommodated in temporary wooden units, on a cruise ship, and in hotels. This decision was made to cut costs but led to significant criticism from teams who complained about the lack of space and short beds.

Some sports officials from Thailand likened the situation to “musical chairs,” stating that with the increasing number of athletes and officials, the number of beds was insufficient.

Brilliant Performances and Criticisms

As the closing ceremony approached, senior officials were on the defensive. Husain Al-Musliman, the Secretary General of the Olympic Council of Asia, referred to statistics regarding the breaking of 50 world records at these games, stating, “The numbers are the truth.” However, he also pointed out the challenges related to athletes' sleep and transportation, emphasizing that these issues negatively impacted their performance.

The games were held amid some management and execution problems, including the playing of North Korea's national anthem for the South Korean hockey team and the absence of sports buses at the scheduled times. Two teams were sent to the wrong location, resulting in a delay in a volleyball match.

Results and Honors

In the end, Japan secured second place in the medal table with 83 gold medals, while China topped the table with 169 gold medals. One of Japan's honors was the gold medal won by Yuki Korihera in an eSports competition, making him the youngest champion in the history of these games.

Despite the challenges and criticisms, the 2023 Asian Games will be recorded as an important and memorable experience in the path of hosting international sports events in the future.
