Rashed Nawaf and Mishari Nawaf made history by winning the first gold medal in padel at the Aichi-Nagoya 2026 Asian Games. These two Qatari athletes defeated the Malaysian national team consisting of Aiden Younis and Christian Chen in a thrilling men's final with a score of 6-3 and 6-1.
The Path to Success for Rashed and Mishari
The victory of these two Qatari athletes marked a perfect run for them, as they did not lose a single set throughout the knockout stages. Qatar began their campaign with a decisive win against Abdulaziz Mayouf and Foad Behbehani from Kuwait in the Round of 16. They then advanced to the semifinals by defeating Abdullah Al Abdullah and Fares Al Janahi from the UAE in the quarterfinals in two straight sets.
In the semifinals, Rashed and Mishari convincingly defeated Hami Golestan and Arya Roghani from Iran to reach the final. In the final, they controlled the game, finishing the first set in their favor with a score of 6-3 and, with complete dominance, lost only one game in the second set, finishing it 6-1.
Recognition of the Champions
After this historic victory, Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad Al Thani, President of the Asian Diamond Council and Chairman of Qatar's Diamond Committee, awarded gold medals to these two athletes. He wrote on social media: "The first gold medal in the history of the Asian Games in padel belongs to Qatar." He also congratulated Rashed and Mishari, considering this achievement a significant success for Qatari sports and its champions.
Sheikh Jassim bin Hamad Al Thani, the personal representative of the Emir of Qatar, was also present at this historic victory. The significance of this title is heightened as padel was introduced for the first time in the official program of the Aichi-Nagoya 2026 Asian Games, making Qatar the first country to win a gold medal in this sport.
This result also added to Qatar's total medal count in Japan, bringing the total number of medals for the Qatari delegation to 16, including 5 gold, 6 silver, and 5 bronze. Qatar's success in padel comes as athletes from this country continue to achieve historic results throughout the games, which conclude on Sunday.
