CPI Inflation Rate in India Reached 4.82% in August

The retail inflation rate in India based on the Consumer Price Index (CPI) reached 4.82% in August 2026. This statistic is based on official data released by the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation. This data examines national consumer price changes on an annual basis and shows price changes compared to the previous year.

Inflation Rate in Rural and Urban Areas

According to the published information, the annual inflation rate based on the overall Consumer Price Index for India for August 2026 compared to August 2025 has reached 4.82%. Additionally, the inflation rates in rural and urban areas have been reported at 5.23% and 4.31%, respectively. This statistic indicates that price increases in rural areas have been greater than in urban areas, which could have various economic implications.

Impact of Food Prices

The Ministry of Statistics also announced details regarding the movement of food prices through the Consumer Food Price Index. The annual inflation rate based on the overall Consumer Food Price Index for India for August 2026 compared to August 2025 has reached 5.95%. This figure indicates a significant increase in prices in this sector, with food prices in both rural and urban areas being above the overall inflation average.

The inflation rates related to rural and urban areas in this sector have been reported at 6.13% and 5.64%, respectively. Among various groups, personal care items and social services experienced the highest inflation rate at 15.17%. Restaurant and accommodation services also ranked second with an inflation rate of 8.38%.

The food and beverages group recorded an inflation rate of 5.66%, which is higher than the average retail inflation rate. Additionally, the group of tobacco and narcotics registered an inflation rate of 4.71%, which is closely aligned with the overall consumer index.

In other expenditure groups, the transportation sector shows an inflation rate of 4.60%, while educational services have been recorded at a rate of 3.73%. Meanwhile, the clothing and footwear group experienced an inflation rate of 3.56%.

The household goods, household equipment, and routine maintenance group recorded an inflation rate of 2.68%, and the housing, water, electricity, gas, and other fuels sector followed with 2.61%. At the bottom of this list, information and communications recorded the lowest inflation rate at 2.01%, and recreation, sports, and culture recorded an inflation rate of 1.74%.

The health sector also shows the lowest inflation rate among all tracked sectors at 1.34%. This situation reflects the existing economic challenges and opportunities in India and necessitates attention and appropriate policy-making to control inflation across all sectors.
