The recent attacks indicate an escalation of tensions in the region. While the 2022 ceasefire, which had long helped halt hostilities, has unraveled since July, Saudi Arabia and the Houthis have once again exchanged fire. The Houthis have recently targeted airports, energy infrastructure, and military centers in Saudi Arabia.
Consequences of Recent Attacks
Attacks on the financial district, which is one of the symbols of Saudi Arabia's economic and social reforms, are highly concerning. This area, adorned with glass skyscrapers and luxury shops, also includes housing and a metro station with heavy traffic during peak morning hours. Targeting this area could signify an escalation in conflicts and more serious implications for regional security.
In the early hours of Sunday, coalition spokesman Turki al-Maliki announced that "air defense systems intercepted and destroyed two ballistic missiles launched by the Houthis that were aimed at Riyadh." Loud explosions were heard in the capital of Saudi Arabia.
Saudi Arabia is seeking assistance from its allied countries as the daily assaults by the Houthis on the kingdom have increased. Additionally, Yemeni officials announced that thousands of Syrian forces will be deployed to Saudi Arabia and Yemen, some of whom have already been stationed in the region.
The United Nations has reported that since the resumption of hostilities in Yemen, which is in a difficult economic situation, more than 1,600 people have been killed and over 300,000 displaced.
