Despite the recognition of the Palestinian state by countries such as France, Britain, and several others last year, it seems that it is now much further from becoming a reality. Adam Badr, a 27-year-old Palestinian entrepreneur living in Tulkarm in the West Bank, said: "I was happy about this news, but now, after a year, we see no improvement; rather, the situation is getting worse every day, and no one can do anything."
Increase in Violence and Weakening of the Authority
One year after the recognition of the Palestinian state on September 22, 2025, the situation on the ground has deteriorated sharply. The violence from Israeli occupiers has significantly increased, and Palestinians are being pushed into smaller areas. The Palestinian Authority has also clearly weakened.
Emmanuel Macron, the President of France, led a special meeting at the United Nations to recognize the Palestinian state amid global outrage over Israel's military operations in Gaza. At this meeting, ten countries, including Britain, Canada, and Australia, confirmed the recognition of the Palestinian state, bringing the total number of countries that have taken this step to about 157.
Serious Obstacles to the Formation of a Palestinian State
However, Israel, backed by the United States, strongly opposes the formation of a Palestinian state and has intensified its efforts to isolate the Palestinian Authority led by Mahmoud Abbas. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu also refrained from formally annexing the West Bank last year, but observers believe that informal annexation is occurring.
Omar Awadallah, the Deputy Foreign Minister of the Palestinian Authority, said: "Political and diplomatic recognition creates a solution for two states, but unfortunately, in reality, this still depends on Israel's illegal behavior, which does not comply with international resolutions."
Despite these challenges, some individuals like Sama, a software engineer in Nablus, still view the recognition of the Palestinian state as a positive sign but are aware of the existing difficulties, stating: "There is a significant gap between international recognition and its realization on the ground."
