Germany is nearing the signing of a proposed $8 billion submarine deal with India. Jasper Wieck, the German ambassador to India, announced that this agreement is ready to be signed as soon as the necessary approvals from India are completed. He emphasized that this contract is considered a technology partnership and is not just a sale of submarines.

Details of the Submarine Contract

The German ambassador stated that this partnership includes the German defense giant, Thyssenkrupp Marine Systems, and will focus on production in India and technology transfer. He added: "The most important point in this contract is that it is a real partnership. It is not just about selling German submarines in India, but it relates to production and technology transfer in India."

Benefits of Cooperation for India

Wieck also pointed out that this cooperation will benefit several companies and help develop India's maritime ecosystem. He stated: "Many companies and the entire ecosystem in the maritime sector will benefit from this agreement and this partnership." This contract is part of a broader defense and industrial cooperation between India and Germany, where technology transfer and domestic production are key elements.

The German ambassador further added that Berlin is ready to sign this contract whenever India completes the necessary approvals. He said: "Germany is ready at any moment to sign the contract as soon as the Indian side is prepared. We are waiting for the final approval from various Indian authorities, and then we can initiate this very important partnership."

Development of Defense Relations between India and Germany

This submarine project is part of broader defense and industrial cooperation between India and Germany. Last August, India and Germany signed and exchanged a roadmap for defense industrial cooperation and an agreement for collaboration in training United Nations peacekeeping forces. These agreements were signed during the three-day visit of Rajnath Singh, India's Defense Minister, to Germany.

Singh and his German counterpart, Boris Pistorius, the Federal Minister of Defense, were present at the signing of these agreements. These agreements are considered an important step in strengthening the strategic defense partnership between the two countries and demonstrate the serious commitment of India and Germany to defense and industrial cooperation.
