Ransomware attacks reached their highest level in August 2026, with over 1000 organizations worldwide identified as "culprits" of these attacks. India has been introduced as the primary target country in the Asia-Pacific region.

Ransomware Attack Statistics for August 2026

According to published reports, August has been recorded as the most active month for ransomware attacks in 2026. In this month, 1034 organizations were identified as victims by 88 ransomware groups. This increase reverses a three-month declining trend from March to June, with the volume of attacks in July increasing by 60 percent and a further 25 percent increase in August.

India at the Top of Target Countries

India has been identified as the most targeted country in the Asia-Pacific region with 24 victims, ranking seventh globally. Various industries, including manufacturing, professional services, information technology, and information technology-enabled services (ITES), and healthcare are facing greater risks. In particular, the manufacturing industry with 151 victims and professional services with 147 victims lead this list.

These industries are at greater risk due to the impacts of operational disruptions and the sensitivity of customer information. Therefore, India's large base of IT services and manufacturing is dependent on these two factors.

Distribution of Victims in Asia-Pacific

The Asia-Pacific region recorded a total of 143 victims, accounting for 13 percent of the global total. This region ranks second compared to the Americas with 603 victims and Europe with 270 victims. Additionally, the countries of India, Thailand, Taiwan, and Japan, with 68 victims, make up nearly half of the victims in this region. Australia and New Zealand also separately recorded 22 victims.

Global Statistics and Ransomware Group Activity

The United States continues to be recognized as the primary target country globally with 484 victims, constituting 48 percent of the total victims, which is nearly ten times the 50 victims recorded in Italy, the second target country. However, in the Asia-Pacific region, the Qilin group, known as the most active ransomware group in the world, has not been able to take the lead. The Gentlemen group, with 20 victims in this region, is in the lead.

Meanwhile, the regional groups Krybit and Orova have recorded 13 and 12 victims respectively, which is overall more than the number of victims of the Qilin group in this region, although none of them are among the top 5 active global groups.
