India is currently facing challenges in its services trade balance, as per an ICICI Bank research report, with the country's service imports significantly increasing faster than its exports. This situation could negatively impact the net foreign exchange earnings generated by India's services sector and act as a significant barrier against a large goods trade deficit.

Decline in Net Services Exports

According to the report, net services exports in September 2026 decreased by 10 percent compared to the previous year, reaching $16.9 billion. This decline is attributed to a 0.9 percent drop in gross services exports to approximately $36 billion and an 8.9 percent increase in service imports to nearly $19 billion. This trend indicates that India's spending on purchasing services from abroad is rapidly increasing, while revenues from services sold to foreign markets have sharply decreased.

Sustainability Challenges in Services Trade Balance

India's services exports, which include information technology, financial, commercial, and professional services, have traditionally helped offset the high costs of goods imports. However, when service imports grow faster than exports, the surplus in the services trade balance decreases, which could negatively impact the offsetting of the goods trade deficit.

This trend is observed while India's goods exports recorded a strong growth of 23 percent in September compared to the previous year, indicating differing trends in the trade performance of goods and services in the country. However, the decline in services exports in September does not imply a sustainable weakening of India's services trade position.

According to ICICI Bank, net services exports in the first half of the fiscal year 2026 increased by 4 percent compared to the previous year, reaching $103 billion. Meanwhile, the average monthly surplus in the first half of the fiscal year rose to $17.1 billion, up from $16.5 billion last year.

Monthly and half-yearly differences indicate that while the services sector continues to provide significant support to India's foreign trade position, maintaining this cushion depends on export performance to align with rising service import costs.

The September figures are still preliminary, and the release of subsequent data may provide greater clarity on whether this slowdown is temporary or indicative of a broader adjustment in services trade.
