India, in an official statement, called for the improvement and strengthening of United Nations peacekeeping operations and emphasized the need for better equipment and greater protection for these operations. India's Foreign Minister, Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, stressed the importance of increasing resources and support for peacekeeping forces at a UN Security Council meeting and highlighted India's extensive participation in this area.

India's Participation in Peacekeeping Operations

Since the inception of UN peacekeeping activities in 1948, India has deployed over 300,000 military personnel to around 50 different missions. As one of the largest contributors of peacekeeping forces in the world, the country has played a significant role in maintaining security and stability in crisis-affected regions. Jaishankar further stated that India has always adhered to the principles of maintaining global peace and security and is ready to continue its efforts in this regard.

The Necessity of Improving Quality and Representation

The Indian Foreign Minister also emphasized the necessity of improving quality and representation in peacekeeping operations. He stated that these operations need to be more representative and comprehensive and should respond to the real needs of host countries. Jaishankar pointed out the existing challenges in peacekeeping operations, noting that in many cases, the forces present face shortages of resources and equipment, which diminishes their effectiveness in carrying out their missions.

He highlighted the importance of securing adequate resources for peacekeeping operations and urged other countries to contribute more actively in this area to strengthen and improve these operations. India believes that international cooperation and constructive engagement can lead to the establishment of a more effective and sustainable system in peacekeeping operations.

Ultimately, the Indian Foreign Minister called for serious attention to the challenges facing peacekeeping operations and the need for reforms in this area. He emphasized that only by improving resources and equipment can the security and humanitarian situation in crisis-affected areas be enhanced.
