Iran announced that three more tankers were damaged in the Strait of Hormuz on Thursday. This incident highlights the ongoing dangers for maritime transport in the region, especially after American voters punished President Donald Trump for the war in the Persian Gulf.
Impact of Elections on War Policies
The electoral defeat that resulted in the loss of congressional control by Trump's Republicans has led to a serious reassessment of the political costs of this conflict in Washington. J.D. Vance, the Vice President, stated in a lengthy social media post that the war was the reason for his party's defeat.

In response to these remarks, Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf, the Speaker of the Iranian Parliament, accused Vance of allowing Trump to act like a "losing gambler" and continue planning for further attacks. Qalibaf added, "If Vance believes the war was a mistake, he should convince Trump to stop it."
Peace Talks and Attack Status
Oil prices have significantly decreased in recent days, as traders speculate that Trump may be less inclined to resume attacks due to political changes. However, prices are still down more than $20 from last week.
Since last week, Iranian officials have met with Qatari mediators regarding proposals to end hostilities, but no progress has been announced on the key issues that have prevented a peace agreement. Meanwhile, attacks on tankers in the Persian Gulf continue to rise, with at least five ships reporting incidents since Sunday.
The Islamic Revolutionary Guards of Iran believe that the passage route without Tehran's consent is unsafe and reported that two tankers struck sea mines and another tanker caught fire on Thursday. Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei, Iran's Supreme Leader, emphasized on Wednesday that "there is not the slightest inclination to surrender to the United States" and stated that the U.S. will remain hostile towards Iran regardless.
Despite these developments, peace efforts are focused on the future status of the Strait of Hormuz, the blockade that the United States has imposed on Iranian ports, and negotiations regarding Tehran's nuclear program. A senior Iranian official stated that the two sides are still far apart.
