Iran has significantly ramped up its efforts to target American personnel, and these plans have reached advanced stages. This warning was issued by a senior intelligence official in the previous U.S. administration, Jay Clayton, and was written on October 23.

Increased Threats

This warning comes following a reduction in the number of staff at the U.S. diplomatic mission in Saudi Arabia due to increased attacks by Iran-aligned Houthi forces. These attacks coincide with a nearly eight-month regional conflict stemming from the Iran war, which has seen an increase in assaults on commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz.

Earlier this month, news sources reported that Iran is preparing a stronger response in the event of a resumption of widespread U.S. military attacks on its territory. Clayton explicitly stated in his letter to Marco Rubio, the U.S. Secretary of State, that received intelligence indicates Iran has significantly increased its efforts to target American personnel.

New U.S. Security Measures

The U.S. State Department on Wednesday ordered the departure of non-essential government personnel and their family members from diplomatic missions in Saudi Arabia and also planned for the departure of family members from several other missions in the region. According to U.S. officials, threats from Houthi attacks and Iranian terrorist plots against American officials have influenced personnel decisions at embassies.

These flexible measures allow the U.S. to make personnel decisions without publicly announcing changes to mission statuses. The Iran war is soon entering its ninth month, which has significantly impacted Donald Trump's presidential approval ratings ahead of the midterm elections on November 3.
