Iran's Foreign Minister, Mohammad Javad Zarif, will travel to China on September 16 and will meet and discuss with his Chinese counterpart, Wang Yi. This trip comes as China prepares for President Xi Jinping's upcoming meeting with the United States on September 24.
Bilaterals Discussions
The Chinese Foreign Ministry stated in a statement that the discussions between Zarif and Wang Yi will focus on bilateral issues and regional developments. This meeting occurs amid rising tensions in West Asia due to military confrontations with the United States, and Iran is seeking diplomatic engagement with its key partners in this regard.

Past Meetings and Areas of Cooperation
Zarif and Wang Yi had previously met on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization Foreign Ministers' meeting in Kyrgyzstan last July. Zarif also met and discussed with the Chinese Foreign Minister on the sidelines of the BRICS summit.
The Iranian Foreign Minister's trip to China follows Iran's participation in the 18th BRICS summit in New Delhi, where Iranian President, Masoud Pezeshkian, led his country's delegation. At this summit, Pezeshkian urged member countries to take practical actions against unilateral and inhumane sanctions and emphasized the need for this group to play a greater role in resolving global disputes.
At the BRICS summit, members unanimously adopted the Delhi Declaration 2026, which called for reforms in global governance and stronger representation for developing countries. This declaration also expressed deep concern over escalating tensions in West Asia and emphasized the need for maximum restraint, protection of civilians, and civilian infrastructure.
On the sidelines of this summit, Pezeshkian also met with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and the two sides discussed bilateral relations and regional developments. Modi emphasized the importance of continuing efforts to ensure peace and sustainable stability in the region.
In this context, the discussions between Zarif and Wang Yi will provide an opportunity to exchange views on regional developments and international issues ahead of Xi Jinping's engagement with Washington.
