Isaac Herzog, the President of Israel, is currently in the spotlight with a humble and gentle approach as he is responsible for selecting an individual to form the upcoming coalition government. According to initial results, neither of the coalitions led by Benjamin Netanyahu and Gadi Eisenkot have managed to secure the necessary majority in the Knesset (Israeli parliament).

Herzog's Important Decision

After the official announcement of the election results, Herzog will consult with party representatives and introduce a candidate who has the best chance of forming a government. This selection does not necessarily mean that the candidate will be from the party that holds the most seats. According to law, the president, who otherwise mainly has a ceremonial role, has broad powers, and there is no specific guidance for this selection.

Before the voting on Tuesday, Herzog referred to significant pressures and emphasized that he would not be influenced by foreign interference, especially from Donald Trump. He said, "I do not think that the President of the United States or anyone else can interfere with me. It is the democracy of Israel and its constitution that matter to me."

Efforts to Prevent New Elections

The President of Israel also announced that he would do everything in his power to prevent new elections, which could occur if none of the coalitions are able to form a government. He mentioned the possibility of supporting a unity government between Netanyahu and Eisenkot.

Herzog, who was sworn in as President of Israel in 2021, is recognized as a diplomatic figure committed to the country's interests, backed by strong political support and rich experience. He was elected as a member of the Israeli parliament in 2003 and has held various responsibilities, including in the ministries of housing, tourism, and welfare.

In 2015, as the leader of the Israeli Labor Party, he attempted to oust Netanyahu as Prime Minister and portrayed himself as a softer and more balanced alternative.

The Tuesday elections are seen as a referendum on Netanyahu's long tenure in power, which has significantly shifted the country to the right and has triggered a wave of wars in response to the Hamas attack on October 7, 2023.

In an interview with a media outlet in March 2026, Herzog stated that the ongoing war between the United States and Israel with Iran has become a "historical turning point." He emphasized that this moment could help change the course of the region.

Herzog's father, Chaim Herzog, previously served as the President of Israel and also as the country's ambassador to the United Nations. He is known for his efforts towards peace with the Palestinians and is referred to by the nickname "Bougie."
