Italian and Kuwaiti diplomats are working to turn the commitments of the Italy-Kuwait Action Plan 2027-2030 into tangible results. Lorenzo Morini, the Italian ambassador, elaborated on this plan during a press conference held during the visit of Giorgia Meloni, the Italian Prime Minister, to Kuwait.

Joint Action Plan

The joint action plan includes an ambitious agenda in various fields including defense, security, trade, and tourism. Ambassador Morini emphasized that the real time to realize this plan has arrived, and progress will be monitored through regular meetings under existing bilateral mechanisms.

Strengthening Military and Security Cooperation

This plan also aims to enhance interaction between the armed forces' general staffs of the two countries and to foster deeper dialogues in the fields of space, cyber defense, and emerging and disruptive technologies. The Italian ambassador noted that Italy is ready to increase its military personnel in Kuwait if needed and requested, although there are currently no specific plans for troop deployment.

Meloni's visit to Kuwait, which was delayed in April due to regional instabilities, marks her thirteenth trip to a Gulf country since taking office. During this visit, she emphasized the historical and fraternal ties between Italy and Kuwait, stating, "We have always stood by each other in important moments of our histories."

During this visit, three additional cooperation documents were also signed, including a non-binding agreement between the Italian defense company Leonardo and the Kuwaiti Ministry of Defense for the development of defense capabilities and industrial cooperation. Kuwait had ordered 28 Eurofighter Typhoon aircraft from Leonardo in 2016, with deliveries starting in 2021 and not yet completed.

The joint action plan also addresses cooperation in agriculture and technology to improve cultivation in desert areas, combat desertification, and enhance water management. Additionally, the two countries will work on critical minerals and their role in energy transition and the development of carbon reduction technologies. Finally, tourism is also one of the areas of cooperation where tourism officials and entities from Italy and Kuwait will collaborate to increase the flow of tourists between the two countries.
