The limpet mine attacks in the Strait of Hormuz have recently drawn attention. An oil tanker belonging to the United Arab Emirates named M/T Louise-1 was damaged on Thursday night due to the explosion of limpet mines that had adhered to its hull. This incident occurred while two mines were attached to the hull of the tanker above the waterline, and after the attackers detonated them from a small boat, a fire broke out in the engine room of the tanker.

Details of the Incident and Consequences

This incident occurred at 10 PM local time in the Strait of Hormuz. Despite the damages incurred, the crew of the Louise-1 tanker were unharmed in this incident. According to a maritime monitoring agency based in England, this attack is considered the first successful use of limpet mines by Iran in these waters since June 2019. At that time, a series of similar attacks on commercial tankers led to severe tensions between Iran and the United States.

Analysis of Strategic Changes

These attacks seem to indicate a change in Iran's approach in attempting to create obstacles in maritime transport in the Strait of Hormuz. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps of Iran has consistently used various tactics to pressure commercial shipping routes. These attacks may also be viewed as a response to the economic and military pressures placed on Iran in recent years.

The Iranian government has repeatedly denied responsibility for similar attacks and appears to continue this pattern in this case as well. Meanwhile, U.S. military forces, which have been training and supporting commercial vessels in this strait, have yet to confirm this attack.

These developments could impact global oil markets as well as maritime security in the region. Given the importance of the Strait of Hormuz as a key shipping route for oil tankers, these attacks could significantly affect oil prices and the economic policies of countries dependent on this route.
