The nationwide bank strike in India is planned from September 28 to 30, 2026, at the suggestion of the United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU), which may lead to disruptions in banking and financial services across the country.

Impact on Money Transfer Services

However, R. Madhusudanan, a financial expert and former SBI bank official, has stated that money transfer services from Oman to India will not be directly affected by this strike. He added that public and private sector banks in India will continue to operate on Sunday, September 27, due to an order from the Reserve Bank of India, providing an opportunity for customers, including expatriates, to carry out important banking transactions before the strike begins.

Potential Concerns for Customers

Madhusudanan also noted that given the continued operation of online banking services and banking applications, retail customers may not face significant issues in conducting their daily digital transactions. On the other hand, ATMs are also expected to continue functioning. Several banks, including SBI, have announced measures such as waiving certain fees for ATM usage during the strike period.

However, due to technical issues, confirmations related to financial transparency or other processing requirements at receiving banks in India may slow down the transfer of funds from Oman during the strike. Therefore, expatriates with immediate financial obligations in India may want to send their funds earlier on Sunday, September 27, to reduce the likelihood of delays.

Additionally, the banking calendar immediately after the strike may exacerbate delays. Banks are expected to reopen on October 1, while October 2 is considered a bank holiday for Gandhi Jayanti. Furthermore, September 30 is recognized as the end of the bank's financial half-year, which could increase operational pressure and customer transaction volumes.

As a result, there may be significant congestion after the banks reopen following the strike. Therefore, customers should avoid making urgent transactions until the last minute, and expatriates in Oman may want to conduct their important banking and money transfer transactions on Sunday.
